TACO! to move to Cygnet Square
OPENING LATE SUMMER 2022
In Summer 2022, TACO! will move into a purpose-designed space in the newly-developed Cygnet Square, adjacent to Southmere Lake at the heart of Thamesmead. The new space will enable TACO! to further engage with our local context of Thamesmead.
Designed by architects Manalo & White – who have previously worked with other contemporary art institutions including Focal Point Gallery in Southend, Matt’s Gallery and the East End Women’s Museum – the new space will comprise a full height gallery and event space, a café and bar with outdoor seating, and bookshop. It will also incorporate a new broadcast studio for RTM.FM that will support a greater number of shows and expanding our programme to include a a new night-time programme of live performance and music events.
M&W's design for the space makes specific reference to some of the architectural interventions made by residents in Thamesmead's brutalist and modernist vernacular, using bricks as a core material for the space.
We'll be announcing more details soon about our 2022 artistic programme that includes a range of projects whilst construction work is undertaken, and animating the space once it finally opens.
