HANNAH LEES AND REBECCA JAGOE IN CONVERSATION

Hannah Lees and Rebecca Jagoe join in conversation as part of the exhibition Something where before there was nothing. Thinking on care, kinship, surrogacy and dependence, the artists discuss how we become unwitting symbiotic carers for our own biome; our sensorial responses to beings that eschew the boundaries between self- and non-self; and the ways in which we might conceive of care as a matter of responsibility, parasitism, commodity or mutual aid.

Rebecca Jagoe is a non-binary, disabled, autistic artist who works across text, performance and sculpture. Their work is a material memoir which examines how experiences of illness, madness, and gender are informed by specific Western, imperialist narratives around the ‘human’, and human dominion over the earth. Jagoe was a Wales in Venice 10 Fellow 2022-23 and part of the Freelands Fellowship 2021-22. They have recently shown work at Chapter in Cardiff (Experimentica performance festival), g39 in Cardiff, Freelands Gallery in London, and Site Gallery in Sheffield (all 2023). They have also shown at the Drawing Room in London, Mostyn in Llandudno, EKKM in Tallinn, and Kim? in Riga (all 2021), and Wysing Arts Centre in Cambridge and CCA Goldsmiths (2020). With Sharon Kivland they have published two anthologies, ON VIOLENCE (2018) and ON CARE (2020), published by Ma Bibliotheque.
