Mind Your Head Art Cabaret returns to Thamesmead with Out of the Rubble! a surreal evening of humour, weirdness and pastiche with live art collaborations, music and site-specific occurrences that consider the perpetual demolition and rebuild of the area, whilst delivering some rebirth and recovery in these most difficult times! Mind Your Head compere’s Spruce Monkscyth (Calum F Kerr) & M’Lie-dee (Caroline Gregory) present a range of performers including Eva Lis and Robert Sookhan as Flying Carpets, Thamesmead’s luscious, lascivious and all-around lovely lady, Letti O’Burn accompanied by Sunnyboy Tyson, performance artists Maryam Sandjari Hashemi, Sarah Doyle, duo Sparkes Thompson, and musical social commentators - the Receipt.
Spruce Monkscyth is best known for the 1980’s quiz show Name That Horse?! Art auctioneer, bingo-master, songsmith, all-around entertainer. M'Lie-dee insists she was once fabulously wealthy, impossibly glamorous and in great demand as an
exclusive nightclub hostess in 1950s Balham. She lost everything on the horses, apparently, which may explain why she's been in a bad mood ever since....
Mind Your Head Art Cabaret is staged within The Hotsnakes Night Club, an immersive installation and performance space by artist Chloe Langlois. Co-curated by TACO! and Dinosaur Kilby, the club hosts a diverse programme of cabaret, live artist performance, workshops, and experimental music from invited artists and guests. Drawing on aesthetics of ‘social’ performance traditions such as clowning, folk rituals, stand-up comedy, vaudeville, and the occult, Langlois has transformed TACO! Into an artist nightclub complete with an artist-themed cocktail bar.
Mind Your Head Art Cabaret is a supportive environment for live performance art, poetry, music, film, and all in between. Compered by 80’s TV-personality Spruc Monkscyth and his extremely belligerent assistant M’Lie-dee, between 2017 - 2020 it was in the basement of the famous Golden Anchor pub in Nunhead. In 2022 there was 'Sea Creatures' at the Zuzushii Art Laboratory, a popular arts venue in Hasting and in 2023 ‘Wildflower Whoopee’ at the Moorings Sociable Club in Thamesmead. Mind Your Head Art Cabaret is an artist-led project by Calum F Kerr and Caroline Gregory.
Calum F Kerr is an artist and performer inhabiting both human and non-human forms, including J D Swann, Brian Guest, Spruce Monkscyth, Maurice the Dodo, a Ghostly White Whale, Sirius the Super-Intelligent Sheep Dog, The Marsh Dweller
and many more.
Caroline Gregory is an artist, curator and arts psychotherapist who works across live art, installation, performance and participatory projects. Alongside her own practice, she develops artist-led and community projects that bring people together through creativity.
Eva Lis is a multimedia artist whose practice is rooted in site-specific response. Working directly with the character, history and energy of a given location, she creates immersive works that unfold through time, space and live interaction.
Robert Sookhan is a sound artist exploring place, memory and the invisible force that shape our relationship to built and natural environments.
Thamesmead’s luscious, lascivious and all-around lovely lady, Letti O’Burn shines bright onstage with her comedic, hyperactive, active-aggressiv performances with a specialisation in Funk, Soul and Disco. An all singing, all stand- up, semi dancing drag queen, Letti O’Burn has performed in venues such as The Divine, Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club and Pleasance Theatre. She is Top Of the Slops Finalist and the long-running hostess/ producer o Thamesmead
Shantay.
Known as the Thamesmead Dinosaur, Sunnyboy Tyson is Thamesmead's mythical mouth organist, only appearing for a special event once a year. A veteran performer of over 40 years, multi-instrumentalist and lead singer o Old Boys Blues Band, Sunnyboy Tyson is sure to brighten up your day with his magnificent musical skills.
Maryam Sandjari Hashemi is a multidisciplinary artist based in London. She explores her inner landscape through her work often in intimate settings. Her recent experimental performances are an outlet for her built up emotions that she often can't express.
Sarah Doyle is an interdisciplinary artist working across drawing, animation, painting, sculpture and multimedia. Her practice explores identity, performance and storytelling through popular culture, folklore and the ways we construct and inhabit
different versions of ourselves.
London-based artists (Sarah) Sparkes and (Ian) Thompson explore the liminal spaces between performance and sound arts. Sparkes is an artist and curator researching ghosts and working with multiple mediums. Her performance wor engages with supernatural and folkloric narratives. Thompson's sound installations are inspired by environmental soundscape, often incorporating video and other media. He is also a 'cellist, regularly performing at free improvisation gigs, and
currently runs the Music and Sound Production programme at the University of Greenwich.
The Receipt presents songs from their debut album Pick Your Battles, a record of social commentary and guitar pop melodies.
