THE HOT SNAKES ARTIST NIGHT CLUB

22.08.26- 13.09.26

CHLOE LANGLOIS

Various events
see details below

The Hot Snakes Night Club is an immersive installation and  performance space by artist Chloe Langlois. Co-curated by TACO!  and Dinosaur Kilby, the club hosts a diverse programme of cabaret, live artist performance, workshops,  and experimental music from invited artists and guests.

For the duration of 4 weeks TACO! will be transformed into a multidisciplinary nightclub, complete with an artist-themed cocktail bar and an accompanying programme of cabaret, live performance and music.

The club launches on 22nd August with the event 24hr Gnosis - a 24 hr occult marathon of artist performances live-streamed on TACO!’s website and IRL in the gallery. Audiences can seek to participate in the gallery sleepover. See the 24hr Gnosis event page for full details.

The full programme of free events hosted by the Hot Snakes Night Club can be found below︎︎︎. Event announcements will be made on the TACO! website and social media.

The nightclub takes its name from Chloe Langlois’s ongoing project - Hot Snakes in which the artist uses performance to interact and communicate with a holy guardian angel from her childhood - the eponymous ‘Hotsnakes’.

Drawing on the aesthetics of ‘social’ performance traditions such as clowning, folk rituals, stand-up comedy, vaudeville, and the occult, Langlois has transformed TACO!  Into an artist nightclub complete with an artist-themed cocktail bar.

Installed in the gallery are a series of moving handmade curtains that define the performance frame for an audience. In collaboration with Wojciech Rusin and The Pipe Shoppe, Langlois has made 4 bespoke sculptural instruments used in performance and communication with a Holy Guardian Angel from Langlois’s childhood - the eponymous ‘Hot Snakes’.   Whilst TACO!’s social space is dressed with further collaborative sculptures extending from the ceiling, turning the air ducting into gargoyle guardians accompanied by silver shimmer curtains.

Today night clubs continue to act as incubators for fashion, music, and contemporary art. The Hot Snakes Night Club takes it inspiration from previous famous clubs, run and designed by artists such as the Cave of the Golden Calf (1912), Cabaret Voltaire (1920), the Electric Circus (1960), and the Blitz Club (1979)

Chloe Langlois completed a BA at Chelsea College of Art, then worked in a betting shop for nearly eight years, moved to Nottingham, and returned to the compulsion of art-making, working with peers in art, comedy, and the occult. She completed an MA in Contemporary Art Practice: Moving Image at the Royal College of Art. Since then she has been trying to contact her Holy Guardian Angel, ‘Hotsnakes’, with mixed results. Looking at the messy and the magical in video and live performance, her interests lie in channeling, re-enactment, non-verbal communication, and collective euphoria.

Dinosaur Kilby is an Artist-Curator based in Birmingham, UK. He currently works at Wolverhampton Art Gallery as a Digital Producer. Between 2021-23 he completed an artist-curator traineeship at Eastside Projects. He set up and ran Cheap Cheap, an artist-led space, between 2019-2023. Dinosaur is currently working on Free House, a new artist studio complex and Prayer Room, a new exhibition space, both in Digbeth, Birmingham. He is also a founding member of Kühle Wampe, a horrible collaboration based across The Midlands.

Peter Wojciech Rusin is a Polish-born audio visual artist based in London. He draws inspiration from alchemical and gnostic texts, early renaissance choral music and Eastern European mythologies. He released Syphon LP on AD93 in 2022 and The Funnel LP on Akashic Records in April 2019. He designs and makes 3D-printed reed instruments, reworking ancient designs with contemporary 3D modelling technologies. In 2020 he released Meat for the Guard Dogs on Cafe OTO’s Takuroku digital imprint, and the Rufus Orbis cassette for Boomkat Editions / Documenting Sound series.
